Meknes

The imperial city of Meknes is a mark of the reign of the Sultan Moulay Ismail, who had a dream of creating the largest royal palace in the nation. His dream never became a reality, but the immense palace and magnificent gateways into the old medina, reflect the work that was undertaken.

The Sultan is reported to have used 25,000 captives in his building projects, and another 33,000 people were killed during his 55-year reign. While this was a fierce part of history, there is lots of remaining beauty to mark the period. The Sultan’s tomb is also considered to be one of the most beautiful monuments in Morocco .
